Jerome Baker Twitter Profile

Probably not shocking news, but the Dolphins released long-time veteran linebacker Jerome Baker today. Bake had been one of the longest-tenured members of the team (maybe even the longest?). He survived multiple coaching regimes including Gase, Flores, and McDaniel. I think that speaks to the type of leader and player that he was.

All in all, I would say Baker will go down as a memorable member of this team from this era of Dolphins football. The team had lacked stability at the MLB position for years, and he brought several intangibles to the defense. I remember when we drafted him out of Ohio State I had concerns that he was a bit undersized. He looked more like the strong safeties I had seen growing up watching football (shout out to Yeremiah Bell, that dude could HIT). But Bake proved that speed and range are paramount in today’s NFL and that was what he brought to the table. I don’t think it’s a surprise that the defense suffered after he went down with that injury against the Jets I believe.

Truth be told, there still exists a world in which Baker plays for this team next year. Reports from Schefter indicated that the Dolphins and Bakers camp tried to negotiate a contract restructure. Although, I feel it’s unlikely. He has always been vocal on social media but his most recent tweet gives me plenty of doubt that he will return:

Unfortunately, Jerome Baker will be one of several Dolphins cap casualties in the coming weeks. The apocalypse is setting in as the Dolphins are light-years ahead of the current cap figure. We already know about Xavien Howard but reports came out yesterday that Christian Wilkins will not receive the franchise tag. Will have to wait and see if more surprise cuts are on the way but the news with Baker probably doesn’t come as a surprise to many.

*UPDATE ok I read his tweet again and now I think he’s insinuating that he is leaving the door open? Idk man I’m off social media till Easter but that might be his subtweet.
